Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder affecting approximately one percent of the population. People with schizophrenia have terrifying psychological symptoms such as hearing voices, losing touch with reality, fear of mind control, and fear that someone is plotting to hurt them. They typically have enduring problems with attention, memory, and problem-solving. Other less obvious symptoms include unusual speech and behavior, social isolation, difficulty understanding social interactions, and knowing how to behave in social situations.

What is Empathy?
We use the term empathy to describe an array of emotional and social experiences. Emotion researchers typically define empathy as the ability to sense other people’s emotions, coupled with the ability to use context clues to imagine what another person might be thinking or feeling. Researchers describe two types of empathy: affective and cognitive empathy.
Affective Empathy
This type of empathy refers to the feelings and sensations we personally experience in response to other people’s emotions. Affective empathy can include unconsciously mirroring what another person is feeling or becoming stressed due to another person’s anxiety.
Cognitive Empathy
Cognitive empathy refers to a person’s ability to identify and understand the emotions of others. Also known as “perspective-taking,” cognitive empathy is challenging for people on the autism spectrum.
Schizophrenia & Empathy
The relationship between schizophrenia and empathy is complicated. Although it has been proposed that schizophrenia is characterized by impaired empathy, several recent studies question this notion. Schizophrenia is not fully understood, but recent studies suggest that some people with schizophrenia may experience high empathy with difficulty distinguishing between “self” and “other.”
Adult Inpatient Treatment for Schizophrenia
In addition to medication management and crisis intervention, we offer two main treatment types at Sunrise Vista. A cognitive-behavioral therapy program (CBT) is a set of therapeutic procedures examining the role of specific thoughts and behavior patterns that interfere with mental health. CBT helps individuals reshape their actions and emotions and by modifying thought patterns and self-perception. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT-informed care) uses group work, skills training, and self-monitoring to help clients change certain behaviors. DBT is a therapy model that uses an amalgam of skill-based training and relationship building between the patient and clinician in order to help clients manage emotions and control their behavior.
